Music evolves rapidly. The music of every generation is different; the change always shocks the generation before. The suited crooners replaced the leather-clad greasers in the fifties; the Beatle era passed, the 70′s brought in long-haired artists and the 80′s pop-rock. Polo shirts, rhythm, long hair and pop rock represented the 1980′s. New attitude reflected the music of 80′s. It would become difficult to sit still when the pulsating rhythm of the 80′s was played. The heart-thumping rhythms of 1980′s are still great for workout. The number one single hit of the 1980′s was Blondie’s ‘Call Me’. The number two position was occupied by Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick in the Wall’. Olivia Newton John’s Xanadu was at number three. The king of pop of the 80′s Michael Jackson’s song ‘Rock with you’ was placed at number four. The rage for Michael Jackson’s music had just begun. Musical Hangover’s like ‘Do that to me one more time’ was at number five. On the 100 top hits lists in the 80′s was Def Leppard’s, ‘Pour some sugar on me’ Written in a span of over five minutes this song was positioned at number two in the 80′s music charts. ‘Livin on a prayer’ by Bon Jovi, the heart throb of the 80′s topped the music charts of the 80′s. The struggle of Tommy and Gina narrated in this song touched the hearts of many people as people could identify with it. In the 80′s music chart, on Billboard’s Hot 100 at the third spot stood ‘Hungry like the Wolf’ composed by the British band, Duran Duran. The count down would remain incomplete without mentioning Madonna. The 80′s were flooded with great songs from Madonna, one of them being ‘Like a Virgin’ Music lovers of the 80′s cannot forget the B-52 singing ‘Love Shack’ and Foreigner’s grand love song, ‘I want to know what love is’. However this song managed to make it only to number 65 on the 80′s music chart. Similarly Bruce Springteen’s ‘Born in the USA’ only made it to number 48. The latter half of the 80′s gave rise to teen pop with artist such as Debbie Gibson coming into the limelight. Artists such as Michael Jackson and Madonna ruled the 80′s music charts for most of the decade and turned into icons. Hip hop in the 80′s was performed by artists such as Run DMC and Salt-n-pepper. The 80′s saw some splendid artist and performers and gave the music lover a great time. Many of the songs are cherished even today by the fans of that era.
